Mobile, Ala. (3/13/09) Junior Ashley Lail threw a no-hitter against South Alabama, leading the North Texas softball team to a 7-2 win against the Jaguars on Friday night.
The Mean Green improves to 13-10 and 2-2 in the Sun Belt Conference, while South Alabama falls to 12-12-1 and 0-1 in conference play. NT takes a 4-3 lead in the series.
“Ashley threw great,” said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard. “She pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second and then she cruised the rest of the way. Our offense came out swinging. We spread the hits around, and I think that is why we were successful.”
Lail pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs off no hits. The no-hitter is the first for Lail at North Texas and the second in Mean Green history. Kristina Fowler threw a five-inning no-hitter against ULM in 2006. The junior improves to 6-3 in the circle for the Mean Green. In last week’s 4-2 win against ULM, Lail allowed just two hits and held the Warhawks hitless for the first four innings.
The only hiccup for Lail came in the second inning when the Jaguars loaded the bases off three walks and then scored their first run off another base on balls. The second runner crossed home plate after Lail hit a batter. Lail did not allow another USA player on base until the sixth inning when a Jaguar drew a walk.
The Mean Green offense backed up Lail, scoring seven runs off 10 hits. Mariza Martinez went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Her two-run homer in the fifth inning gave North Texas a 6-2 advantage. Freshman Lisa Johnson also posted two hits in the game. Only two Mean Green starters did not post a hit in the game.
Senior Sarah Jones put North Texas ahead, 1-0, in the second inning, with an RBI single. She knocked home Martinez who started the inning with a double. After USA scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, North Texas took it right back with three runs in the third.
Senior Kadie Platt started the third off with a double. Freshman Megan Rupp moved her to third with a single up the middle. Jennifer Lynn tied the game with a pinch-hit single, scoring Platt. Mallory Cantler put North Texas back in control with an RBI single and Anna Barren stole home to put North Texas ahead, 4-2. Caitlin Grimes sealed the win with an RBI single in the seventh.
North Texas finishes the conference series with a doubleheader against the Jaguars starting at 12 pm on Saturday.
