Mobile, Ala. (3/14/09) Junior Rebecca Waters posted the game-winning hit to give the North Texas softball team a 6-4 victory against South Alabama on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field. The second game of the doubleheader was halted due to rain, and the two teams will resume play on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Mean Green won its second straight game, improving to 14-10 and 3-2 in the Sun Belt Conference, while South Alabama falls to 12-14-1 and 0-2 in conference play. NT takes a 5-3 lead in the series.
“Today was another good performance by our offense,” said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard. “We are continuing to spread the hits all through the lineup. It was nice to see Rebecca step up and have that clutch hit. Kayla threw well and was in command the whole time, but we brought Jen in to close the door.”
After North Texas took a 4-1 lead, South Alabama tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs. Waters broke the 4-4 tie with a bases-loaded single to center field that scored two runs. The single was the junior’s first hit of the conference series.
Jennifer Smith (5-4) picked up the win for the Mean Green, pitching two scoreless innings. She relieved Kayla Lawson, who pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs off five hits.
For the second game in a row, senior Sarah Jones put North Texas on the scoreboard first with a two-out bases-loaded RBI single in the fourth inning. Freshman Lisa Johnson followed with an RBI single of her own to give North Texas a 2-0 lead.
After South Alabama used a sacrifice bunt to put a run across, Mariza Martinez continued her hot hitting with a two-RBI double in the top of the fifth, putting NT up by score of 4-1. Senior Kadie Platt scored the first run after posting a double to start off the inning.
The Jaguars tied the game in the bottom of the fifth off three hits and one Mean Green error. Freshman Anna Barren started off the seventh with a walk, followed by a Mallory Cantler single. Martinez drew another walk to load the bases for Waters.
The Mean Green outhit the Jaguars, 9-8, but left eight runners stranded on base. Every Mean Green starter except for one posted at least one hit in the game. Cantler was the lone player with two hits.
North Texas finishes the conference series with an 11 a.m. game on Sunday.
