Jones Homers In Mean Green Loss To Texas

Austin, Texas (3/19/09) Senior Sarah Jones hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning, but the North Texas softball team came up short in a 5-3 loss to Texas on Thursday night at McCombs Field.
The Longhorns snapped the Mean Green’s three-game winning streak and increased their series record to 7-0 against NT. Texas improves to 22-10, while the Mean Green falls to 15-11.
Texas pitcher Brittany Barnhill struck out 10 Mean Green batters to earn her 11th win of the season. Jennifer Smith (6-5) took the loss for the Mean Green, allowing five runs off seven hits. Barnhill also posted a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
With North Texas down 4-0 in the sixth inning, Jones hit a three-run homer to cut into the Texas lead. Mallory Cantler started the sixth with a double, and Mariza Martinez followed with a single before Jones knocked them home. Cantler and Jones both posted two hits in the game.
The Mean Green outhit Texas, 8-7, but left five runners stranded on base.
Texas took a 1-0 lead in the third inning off an RBI double,and then Desiree Williams hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to give Texas a 4-0 lead.
North Texas returns to action this weekend when it faces Florida Atlantic on the road in conference play.
