Platt Homers Twice In Mean Green Sweep

Boca Raton, FL (3/21/09) Senior Kadie Platt homered twice to lead the North Texas softball team to a doubleheader sweep against Florida Atlantic on Saturday night at the FAU Softball Stadium. The Mean Green won the first game, 10-2, in five innings, and took the nightcap in eight innings, 5-4.
The Mean Green improved to 17-11 and 5-2 in the Sun Belt, while FAU falls to 17-17 and 0-2 in the conference. NT takes a 5-4 lead in the series.
Batting in the No. 9 position, Platt posted two homers in the doubleheader. She capped a seven-run fifth inning in the first game with a three-run homer and then tied the nightcap at 3-3 with a two-run shot in the top of the seventh.
Rebecca Waters posted the game-winning hit in the top of the eighth inning to give the Mean Green its second win of the day. Waters also doubled to start off the seventh inning. Lyndi Samuelson scored the team's fourth run after starting the eighth inning with a single. Mallory Cantler also scored on the Waters’ single off an error, giving North Texas a crucial insurance run.
Ashley Lail (7-3) picked up the win in the first game, pitching five innings. She allowed one earned run off six hits, while striking out six Owls. Jennifer Smith also picked up her seventh win of the season, pitching in relief, in the second game. She pitched five innings and allowed one earned run off four hits.
The Mean Green offense exploded for seven runs in the the fifth inning of the first game. Mariza Martinez hit a two-run homer, and Platt posted a three-run long ball to cap the inning. Cantler knocked in the first run of the inning with an RBI single. Martinez tied Cantler for the team lead in homers with her fifth of the season. After Sarah Jones hit an RBI single, Platt brought everyone home with her second homer of the season.
Cantler gave North Texas an early 1-0 in the first inning with an RBI double. After FAU tied the game in the bottom of the inning, the two teams exchanged leads. Lisa Johnson scored NT’s third run off a wild pitch, putting North Texas ahead, 3-2. The big fifth inning for the Mean Green sealed the win.
In the second game, FAU took a 2-0 lead off solo home runs in the first and fourth inning. The Owls added to the lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Platt helped send the game into extra innings with her home run in the seventh.
Cantler posted two three-hit games for the Mean Green.
North Texas rounds out the three-game series with a 10 am game on Sunday against FAU.
