Mean Green Softball Falls In Ten Innings

Boca Raton, FL (3/22/09) Rose Gressley recorded the game-winning hit for FAU in the bottom of the tenth inning to lead the Owls to a 4-3 victory against the North Texas softball team on Sunday afternoon at the FAU Softball Stadium.
The Mean Green falls to 17-12 and 5-3 in the Sun Belt, while FAU improves to 18-17 and 1-2 in the conference. The overall series is tied at 5-5, while the Mean Green takes the season series with two wins.
North Texas held a 3-2 lead after scoring three runs in the sixth. FAU tied the game in the bottom of the inning off a Mean Green error. The game went into extra innings and FAU was the first team to score in the tenth.
Kat Stauffer picked up the win for the Owls, holding the Mean Green to eight hits. Junior Ashley Lail (7-4) took the loss for the Mean Green, allowing two earned runs off eight hits in 9.1 innings of work. The Mean Green was hurt by four errors in the game.
With North Texas down 2-0, the Mean Green scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Mallory Cantler knocked in the first run with a double. Megan Rupp scored after reaching base with a single. For the second game in row, Rebecca Waters posted a clutch hit and two runs scored on the play, which was aided by a FAU error. North Texas took a 3-2 lead on the Waters hit, but FAU tied the game in the bottom of the inning off a Mean Green error.
Amber Barton gave FAU a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the third inning.
Cantler posted her third three-hit game of the series. The first baseman led the Mean Green offense with nine hits and three RBI in the three-game series. The Owls were only able to retire the sophomore twice in 11 at-bats. Kadie Platt knocked in five RBI on her two home runs this weekend. The Mean Green offense posted a .309 batting average in the three games. Cantler and Waters each posted three doubles in the series. Three of Waters’ five hits were doubles.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday. March 25 at Oklahoma with a single game at 5 pm.
