Mean Green Softball Faces No. 8 Sooners Tonight

DENTON, Texas (3/25/09) - The North Texas softball team travels to Norman, Okla., today to face Oklahoma in a single-game match-up at 5 pm. The Sooners are currently ranked No. 8 in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 Poll.
The Mean Green continues its second week of playing Big XII opponents. OU is the first ranked opponent that the Mean Green has faced this year. NT is 2-3 this year against Big XII opponents with wins against Iowa State and Kansas.
North Texas assistant coach Erin Evans was an All-American player at Oklahoma. She played for OU from 2000-03 and was a part of four World Series appearances, including the national championship team in 2000.
For the second time this season, Mallory Cantler was named the conference player of the week. In five games, she hit for an average of .611 and posted a slugging percentageof .833.
The Mean Green offense has moved into a higher gear the last couple games. In the last 10 games, North Texas is posting an overall team batting average of .307.
The pitching squad has played a large role in the Mean Green’s success this year. Each of the three pitchers picked up a win this past week. Both Ashley Lail and Jennifer Smith earned their seventh wins of the season. Lail and Kayla Lawson are tied for the team-lead with 45 strikeouts. Overall, the three pitchers are posting a combined 2.35 ERA. The ERA would be a school record if the season ended today.
