Softball Goes 1-1 Against Warhawks

DENTON, Texas (3/7/09) The North Texas softball team lost the opening game against ULM, 9-3, but came back with a 4-2 win in the nightcap to split the opening conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green is now 12-9 overall and 1-1 in the Sun Belt, while the Warhawks extend their record to 7-16 and 1-1 in the conference. NT leads the series, 11-3.
“We didn’t hit the ball well in the first game,” said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard. “ULM came out swinging, and they found the gaps. Ashley threw superb in the second game. We started getting timely hits and did a lot better job producing hits with runners on base in the second game. The good thing about both games was that we were error-free.”
ULM outhit the Mean Green in the opening game, scoring nine runs off 10 hits. North Texas came back in the second game, scoring early runs and holding the Warhawks to just two hits.
Junior Ashley Lail picked up her fifth win, allowing just two runs off two hits in seven innings of work in the second game of the doubleheader. She pitched four hitless innings before allowing a single in the fifth inning. ULM scored two runs off one hit in the seventh inning, but NT held on for the win.
After falling behind early in the first game, North Texas was the first to score in the second game, posting two runs in the second inning. Lisa Johnson and Sarah Jones started the inning with back-to-back singles. Courtney Bradshaw knocked in her first run of the season with a single, scoring Johnson to give North Texas a 1-0 lead. Jones made it 2-0 after reaching home due to a wild pitch.
After reaching base on a hit by pitch, Renae Bromley scored NT’s third run on an obstruction call in the fifth. Mariza Martinez finished the Mean Green scoring with an RBI double in that same inning. For the third time this season, Jones posted three hits in a single game, going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
ULM jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game and never looked back. The Mean Green cut into the lead with two runs in the third inning and a solo home run by Cantler in the fifth but were unable to catch up to the Warhawks. Katie Girardi hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning to extend ULM”s lead to 9-3.

Cantler went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Martinez brought home two runs with a double. Cantler posted her first three-hit game of the season and leads the team with five home runs.
North Texas closes out its series with ULM on Sunday, March 8 at 12 pm.
