Mean Green Softball Comes Up Short Against ULM

DENTON, Texas (3/8/09) The North Texas softball team came out swinging on Sunday, but the Mean Green came up short in a 5-4 loss to ULM at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green is now 12-10 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt, while the Warhawks extend their record to 8-16 and 2-1 in the conference. NT leads the overall series, 11-4, but the Warhawks win two out of the three games in the weekend series.
North Texas posted 11 hits in the game but left nine runners stranded on base. The Mean Green had the bases loaded in the third inning and put two runners on base in each of the final three innings, but was unable to drive runs home.
Junior Ashley Lail picked up the loss in her second appearance this weekend, allowing four earned runs off five hits in seven innings of work. She struck out three Warhawks and walked six.
Brianna Love opened the game with a solo home for ULM. The leadoff hitter for the Warhawks hit .667 in the three-game series with an .833 on-base percentage.
Freshman Caitlin Grimes responded with a three-run homer in the second inning, giving North Texas a 3-1 lead. Sarah Jones and Rebecca Waters both singled to get on base for the Mean Green. Jones went 4-for-8 in the three games for the Mean Green.
The fifth inning proved to be troublesome for the Mean Green. ULM scored four runs off two hits and one Mean Green error to regain the lead. Waters hit a solo home run in the sixth to cut into the lead, but NT was unable to score any more runs.
Megan Rupp, Mallory Cantler, Grimes and Waters all posted two hits in the game. Cantler hit .455 in the series, knocking in nine runs.
North Texas finishes up its homestand with a Thursday home game on March 12 against UTEP at 6 pm.
