DENTON, Texas (4/10/09) - The North Texas softball team hosts Troy this weekend in a three-game conference series. The Mean Green starts play on Friday, April 10 at 4 pm in doubleheader action at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green is off to its best start in school history with a 21-18 mark. With the 3-1 win against Middle Tennessee, the Mean Green became the fastest North Texas team to reach 20 wins. The 2009 team won its 20th victory in 38 games this season. The next milestone is eclipsing the 27 wins the 2008 team recorded. The 27 wins is the most wins in school history in a single season.
NT is 4-9 against Troy. NT lost all three games to Troy in the regular series last year but went 1-1 with the Trojans in the conference tournament. The Mean Green won the final game against the Trojans, 4-2, in 13 innings. The Trojans are in first place in the conference with a 13-2 mark.
The Mean Green continued its play against Big XII teams this week with a Wednesday game against Texas Tech. NT defeated the Red Raiders for the third straight year. NT is 4-5 this year against Big XII opponents. The Mean Green picked up its first-ever win against Baylor in the 7-5 victory last week.
Junior Kayla Lawson picked up her sixth win of the season in the 6-1 victory against Texas Tech. She allowed just one run in seven innings of work. She recorded her ninth complete game, which is the same number of complete games she pitched as a freshman and sophomore combined. She has won three of her last four starts and needs just three more wins to tie her win-total from last year.
Mariza Martinez posted her team-leading seventh home run in the win against Texas Tech. The Mean Green had gone three games without hitting a home run. North Texas has now hit 32 home runs this season. The team school record for home runs in a season is 44, set in 2006. The 2008 team came up just short with 43 home runs. Individually, Martinez moved into third place in career home runs behind Susan Waters and Katya Muller with 15 career home runs.
