Smith Homers Twice In Mean Green Softball Loss

DENTON, Texas (4/26/09) The Mean Green’s Jennifer Smith hit two home runs in a 12-3 loss to the No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette softball team on Sunday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Ragin’ Cajuns swept the regular season series with North Texas, winning all three games.
The Mean Green falls to 25-26 overall and 11-12 in the conference, while ULL improves to 35-10 and 16-5 in the Sun Belt. ULL has swept all six of the regular season series meetings with the Mean Green.
The Mean Green held an early 2-0 lead, but the Ragin’ Cajuns scored four runs in the third inning and then ended the game on a run-rule with five runs in the fifth. Donna Bourgeois won her third game of the weekend, pitching three innings of relief.
Smith gave North Texas a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run shot to right field. After ULL added one run in the second and four runs in the third, Smith cut into the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. She is tied for third on the team with six home runs. The sophomore played all three games this weekend at first base.
Smith is one of six North Texas players to post two home runs in a single game. Katya Muller was the last player to accomplish this feat; hitting two home runs against Middle Tennessee last year.
Ashley Lail (10-11) took the loss for the Mean Green, giving up five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work. ULL outhit the Mean Green, 12-3.
North Texas finishes its regular season on the road with a Tuesday game against UTA and a Thursday game against Texas State.
