Mean Green Softball Concludes Regular Season Today

DENTON, Texas (4/30/09) - The North Texas softball team concludes its regular season today with a 6 pm game against Texas State on the road. The Mean Green is looking to even its overall record and enter the conference tournament on a positive note.
The Mean Green is 25-26 overall and is looking to even its record at 26-26 with its single game tonight. Despite losing eight of its last nine games, North Texas has had a record-setting season. The Mean Green started its season by winning both of its home tournaments: Sleep Inn Classic and the Quality Inn & Suites Invitational.
Sophomore Mallory Cantler was named the MVP of the Quality Inn & Suites Invitational. She went on to receive two conference player of the week honors after posting another stellar season for the Mean Green. The sophomore was sidelined with an injury at the end of the season.
Pitcher Ashley Lail came back from missing all of the 2008 season with a knee injury and threw two no-hitters in 2009. Both of the no-hitters were against Sun Belt schools. Lail was named conference player of the week once and was also named to the Quality Inn & Suites All-Tournament Team.
The Mean Green set a team record for home runs with 48 and is two wins shy of tying the school record for most wins in a season.With its 11-12 Sun Belt record, NT set a school record for most conference wins in a season. In 2009, North Texas also accomplished program milestones. NT broke the 200 home run and 200 stolen base marks.
Individually, a number of players are having record-setting seasons. Mariza Martinez is currently fourth in the single-season record book with 32 RBI, third with 10 home runs and tied for third with 16 stolen bases. Cantler is fourth with 12 doubles, and Rebecca Waters is tied for fifth with 11.
The Mean Green is hosting the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Championship.
