Mean Green Softball Wins Final Game Of Series

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (4/5/09) Ashley Lail shut down the Blue Raiders offense, and Mariza Martinez posted three hits to lead the North Texas softball team to a 3-1 victory against Middle Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at Blue Raider Field.
The Mean Green improves to 20-18 overall and 7-7 in the Sun Belt, while Middle Tennessee falls to 8-25 and 3-12 in the conference. The Blue Raiders took this year’s series, winning two out of the three games.
With the Mean Green down 1-0, Lail came in the game in the first inning and allowed just two hits the rest of the way. She won her team-leading eighth victory after allowing just two hits in seven innings of work. She walked three batters and struck out five Blue Raiders.
North Texas took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs. Renae Bromley scored the tying run after pinch-running for Jennifer Smith. Smith reached on a fielder’s choice, and Bromley walked home after Courtney Bradshaw was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Megan Rupp posted the game-winning hit with an RBI single, and Martinez followed with her own RBI single. Sarah Jones started off the fifth inning with a base hit.
Martinez went 3-for-3 in the game. She recorded three of NT’s seven hits in the game.
Kelsey Dortch gave the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead after leading off the game with a solo home run.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, April 8 when it travels to Lubbock, Texas to face Texas Tech at 3 pm
