DENTON, Texas (5/14/09) North Texas sophomore Mariza Martinez was named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Central Region First Team, announced Thursday by The National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The all-region recognition is the first for the Mean Green centerfielder and a first for the North Texas softball program.
Martinez was named second-team All-Sun Belt after a stellar sophomore campaign. She was the only North Texas player to start all 54 games during the 2009 season. She led the Mean Green with 56 hits, 34 RBI and 11 home runs. Among Sun Belt leaders, Martinez was third in hits and home runs and fourth in total bases with 98.
The sophomore finished second on the North Texas squad and 13th in the conference with a .316 batting average. She led the team with 11 multi-RBI games and tied for the team lead with 11 multi-hit games. Martinez tied for the team lead with 16 stolen bases, which ranked third on the school’s single-season record list. She also broke into the single-season record book for RBI (fourth), slugging percentage (.554, fifth) and home runs (third).
Martinez was one of six outfielders to be named to the all-central region. Four of the selections were from Big XII schools. Louisiana-Lafayette’s Karli Hubbard received all-region honors in the outfield after being named the Sun Belt Conference’s Player of the Year.
Martinez was one of 264 players to be named to an all-region team. These student-athletes were honored from 10 NFCA regions and 121 institutions. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region and all the honorees are eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams.
