DENTON, Texas (5/3/09) The North Texas softball team earned a No.5 seed in the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Championship and will face the No. 4 seed, FIU, in its first-round game on Wednesday, May 6 at 10 am in Denton, Texas. The No. 5 ranking is the highest seed the Mean Green has received since the Sun Belt Conference started fielding an eight-team championship in 2007.
The Mean Green finished its regular season with an overall record of 26-26 and a conference total of 11-12. FIU is 29-27 overall and 13-11 in the conference. The Golden Panthers won two of the three games against the Mean Green this season.
North Texas is playing in its sixth conference tournament. The top eight teams advance to the double-elimination conference tournament. Louisiana-Lafayette won last year’s conference championship and looks to defend its title with a No. 1 seed. The Ragin’ Cajuns took the top seed after winning the regular season title with an 18-5 conference mark.
The Mean Green was idle this past weekend, while other conference teams finished up league play. NT is 4-1 in opening round conference tournament games and 8-10 overall in the tournament the last five years. NT lost to Troy last year in the opening round of the tournament but came back to defeat FAU and Troy before falling to ULM.
North Texas is 4-17 in the all-time series against FIU and 0-1 in the conference tournament. The Mean Green lost to FIU, 4-2, in the 2006 conference tournament. The winner of the game between the Mean Green and the Golden Panthers will play either ULL or ULM on Thursday, May 7 at 3 pm.
North Texas is hosting this year’s tournament. The tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 6 and conclude with the championship on Saturday, May 9 at 3 pm. The tournament will be streamed live on www.sunbeltsports.org and the championship game will be televised.
