Mean Green Softball Falls In Opening Tournament Game

DENTON, Texas (5/6/09) The North Texas softball team lost its opening game in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, falling 8-0 to FIU on Wednesday morning at Lovelace Stadium. The No. 5 Mean Green will face either No. 1 ULL or No. 8 ULM on Thursday, May 7 at 10 a.m.
The Mean Green falls to 26-27 overall and 4-2 in SBC opening-round tournament games, while FIU improves to 30-27 overall. NT is 4-18 in the overall series against FIU and 0-2 in the conference tournament.
Kasey Barrett held the Mean Green offense to just three hits and picked up her 17th win of the season. FIU’s Jessica Landau and Jenny Welch both went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Lead-off hitter Megan Rupp posted two hits for the Mean Green but was left stranded on base. All-Sun Belt honoree Mallory Cantler returned to action against FIU, posting her 13th double of the season in the sixth inning, but North Texas was unable to string together more hits.
FIU put four runs on the scoreboard in the first two innings and then added runs in the fourth and sixth. The bases-loaded single in the sixth ended the game on an eight-run run rule.
The Golden Panthers advance to play the winner of the No. 1 ULL/No. ULM game on Thursday, May 7 at 3 pm. The Mean Green will play the loser of that game at 10 a.m.
