DENTON, Texas (5/7/09) The top-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette softball team knocked the Mean Green out of the conference tournament with an 8-3 victory against North Texas on Thursday morning at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green falls to 26-28 overall and went 0-2 in the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Tournament. ULL extends its record to 39-11 and 1-1 in the tournament. The Ragin’ Cajuns will face either No. 4 FIU or No. 8 ULM on Friday. NT went 0-4 this year against nationally-ranked ULL.
Donna Bourgeois struck out nine Mean Green batters in the win for ULL. The conference pitcher of the year picked up her 27th win in the circle this season. Ashley Lail (11-12) allowed eight runs on 11 hits in the loss.
Christi Orgeron hit a three-run homer in the third inning to give ULL an early lead. After ULL adding another run in the fourth, the Mean Green offense started to catch fire in the bottom of the inning. Megan Rupp, who led the team in the tournament with three hits, started the rally with a single. Anna Barren advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt and then Mallory Cantler brought Rupp home with an RBI single. Mariza Martinez drew a walk to get on base, and Jennifer Smith cut the lead to one with a two-RBI single. A groundout ended the inning.
The Mean Green had opportunities in the fifth and sixth innings but were unable to post a clutch hit. ULL added four runs in the seventh to seal the win.
North Texas finishes its 2009 campaign with a 26-28 record, just one win shy of tying the school record for victories in a season. Cantler and Martinez were named to the All-Sun Belt team after having stellar sophomore campaigns. Lail finished the season with a 2.41 ERA, the lowest earned run average in a single season at North Texas. She also tied for the third-most wins in a single season with 11.
