DENTON, Texas (6/24/09) - University of North Texas head softball coach T.J. Hubbard announced today the hiring of former Baylor pitching standout Lisa Ferguson as the Mean Green’s new assistant coach. At North Texas, Ferguson will assist with the recruiting, pitchers and catchers.
“Lisa is a great addition to our staff” said Hubbard. “Her collegiate experience at Baylor, playing in the College World Series and head coaching experience at Fort Worth Christian will add quality experience, knowledge and expertise to the current staff and program. I think our players will be able to relate to Lisa and look up to her for what she has accomplished.”
Ferguson recently served as the head coach of the Fort Worth Christian Lady Cardinals high school team. The Cardinals went to the play-offs the last two years and were state runner-up for TAPPS 4A in 2009. Ferguson compiled a record of 40-15-3 in her two years with the program.
“I look forward to this opportunity to work with such a diverse and talented pitching staff,” said Ferguson. ”I have high hopes and expectations for these players as we go into the 2010 season. We have strong upperclassmen leadership and young faces ready to rise to the challenge to be the strongest pitching staff for this North Texas softball team.”
A four-year letterwinner for the Baylor Bears as a pitcher from 2004-07, Ferguson was a part of a Big XII conference championship, a Women’s College World Series appearance and a fifth-place finish nationally. She earned second-team all-conference and second-team NFCA All-Midwest Region honors as a junior and first-team All-Big XII recognition as a senior.
As a senior, Ferguson helped lead the Bears to the team’s first conference title and the program’s first appearance in the Women’s College World Series. She finished the 2007 season as the team leader in wins (26), ERA (1.96), shutouts (9), saves (4) and strikeouts (189).
In the Baylor career records book, Ferguson is ranked first in appearances (174), relief appearances (55), wins (82), shutouts (30) and saves (19). She also ranks second in games started (120), decisions (119), completed games (64), innings pitched (806.2) and strikeouts (610).
Since graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education from Baylor in 2008, Ferguson played for the Washington Glory of the National Pro Fastpitch League for the last two years. She was drafted in the 2007 draft but sat out that season because of two herniated discs. She played the 2008 season mostly as a relief pitcher.
In addition to her coaching experience at Fort Worth Christian, Ferguson has also coached with the Texas Missfits out of McGregor, Texas and the Fort Worth Batbusters. For the last five years, Ferguson has given pitching lessons with area pitching coach Ken Graves.
Ferguson is a native of Fort Worth, Texas. She is a graduate of Paschal High School, where she led the Panthers to a district championship and was named district MVP in 2003.
