DENTON, Texas (3/25/10) - The North Texas softball team won its fourth straight game with a 4-3 victory against UTSA on Thursday night at Lovelace Stadium.
North Texas is on a four-game winning streak, which is a season high. The Mean Green improves to 12-9 this season, while the Roadrunners fall to 9-19. North Texas went 2-1 against UTSA this season and leads the overall series, 4-3.
Down 3-0 in the third inning, North Texas battled back with a run in the third and two in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Mallory Cantler and Lisa Johnson both drew walks. With two outs on the scoreboard, Mariza Martinez hit a fly ball to right that bounced out of the outfielder's glove, scoring pinch runner Jessica Shields from second.
Brittany Simmons picked up her second win of the season after relieving starter Jennifer Smith. Simmons pitched five shutout innings and allowed just two hits.
UTSA started the game with a single and quickly built a 2-0 lead in the first off a two-RBI double. Back-to-back triples in the third led to another run, and Simmons replaced Smith in the circle. Simmons was able to work herself out of a bases-load jam to keep the deficit at three runs.
Megan Rupp started the comeback with a lead-off double in the bottom of the third. The sophomore reached third on a groundout and then scored off a Johnson sacrifice fly. Rupp knocked in two runs in the fourth inning with her second double of the game. Courtney Bradshaw and Lesley Hirsch also singled in the inning.
Cantler held off extra innings by drawing a walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Johnson followed her example, and Martinez was able to make contact to get the run in.
Rupp and Bradshaw led the Mean Green offense with two hits each.
