DENTON, Texas (4/25/10) - The North Texas softball team swept its first conference series of the season with a 4-2 win against WKU on Sunday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green improves to 26-14 overall and 12-6 in the Sun Belt. The 12 conference wins is the most ever by a North Texas team. WKU falls to 26-22 and 5-13 in the conference. The Hilltoppers still hold the series advantage, 15-14.
North Texas won all three games against WKU this weekend, sweeping its first conference opponent this season and only its third in school history. The Mean Green has won five of six conference series in 2010 but had been unable to take all three games in a series until this weekend.
The Mean Green had to hold off WKU twice in Sunday's game, but put the game away with two runs in the sixth. WKU tied the game twice at 1-1 and 2-2, and threatened again in the top of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Mariza Martinez threw out the WKU runner attempting to reach home to seal the win.
Courtney Bradshaw continued her hot hitting, going 3-for-3 with two RBI in the 4-2 win. She knocked in the first two runs, including her second home run of the weekend. The junior is now fourth on the team with six home runs.
Kayla Lawson picked up the win in relief. She pitched three innings, allowed one run off four hits. The senior won two games this weekend and is now 7-2 this season.
Bradshaw gave North Texas a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run. WKU tied the game in the top of the fifth off two Mean Green errors. Bradshaw gave North Texas its second lead, 2-1, with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Jessica Shields was tagged out at home after trying to score a second run on the play.
WKU responded a second time, tying the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth with a pinch-hit RBI single. Megan Rupp led off the sixth for the Mean Green with a single up the middle. Rebecca Waters moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Monica Hirsch broke the 2-2 tie with an RBI single, and Lesley Hirsch added an insurance run with an RBI double. The Mean Green left three runners stranded.
Bradshaw mad the final out of the game, tagging out Jamie Hennis who attempted to score from second on Kelsey McCauley's hit to centerfield. Bradshaw led the team this weekend with six hits and six RBI.
North Texas plays its final conference series next weekend when it faces conference leader Louisiana-Lafayette on the road May 1 and 2nd.
