Martinez Named Sun Belt Conference Player Of The Week

DENTON, Texas (4/5/10) - Mariza Martinez was named the Sun Belt Conference's player of the week on Monday after leading the North Texas softball team to a conference series win against FIU. The weekly award is the first of the season for the Mean Green and the first in Martinez's career.
At the lead-off position, Martinez played a large role in the Mean Green's 2-1 record this past weekend against FIU. The junior posted a .538 batting average, recording seven hits including two home runs in the three games. She knocked in seven runs, stole two bases and posted a 1.077 slugging percentage.
The junior scored six of NT's 24 runs and jump-started the offense in almost all her at-bats. In the first win against FIU, she led off with a double and later scored off a wild pitch to give North Texas a 1-0 lead. After FIU tied the game 1-1, Martinez gave North Texas its second lead by posting a single and scoring off a sacrifice fly. In the second game, Martinez contributed to the 5-1 victory with a two-run homer. In the 10-9 loss, the junior posted hits in her first three at-bats, jump-starting the Mean Green offense with each at-bat. She scored runs in each of her first three appearances, including her second home run of the series.
With her two stolen bases, Martinez became the school's career stolen base leader. She is second on the team with five stolen bases and has 27 in her career. Martinez is third on the team with a .333 batting average and leads the team in hits, doubles and RBI.
North Texas holds a record of 15-12 overall and 5-4 in the conference. The Mean Green is currently tied for second in the conference standings.
