Mean Green Softball Defeats FIU In Conference Tournament

Mobile, Ala. (5/13/10) - The North Texas softball team stays alive in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 2-1 victory against No. 2 FIU on Thursday afternoon at Jaguar Field.
The Mean Green improves to 28-19 overall, while FIU falls to 36-19 and is eliminated from the tournament with an 0-2 mark. The 28 wins for the Mean Green is a school record for victories in a season.
Renae Bromley scored off a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to give North Texas a 2-1 advantage. Bromley led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a groundout. Lisa Johnson drew a walk and the wild pitch got away from the catcher, allowing Bromley to score.
Rebecca Waters tied the game in the top of the sixth with a towering solo home run to left field. The home run was the Mean Green's 50th of the season, breaking the school record for home runs in a single season.
Ashley Lail improves to 13-9, pitching seven innings and allowing one run off seven hits. She struck out six FIU batters. Kasey Barrett picked up the loss, allowing two runs off eight hits.
FIU struck first, scoring a run off an infield single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Defensively, Megan Rupp threw out a runner headed home after Ashley McClain singled down the left field line in the bottom of the first inning.
The Mean Green put a runner on base in each of the first five innings but was unable to get anyone home until the sixth. In the top of the fifth, Mariza Martinez and Mallory Cantler hit back-to-back singles with two outs on the scoreboard. Lisa Johnson grounded out to end the threat.
The Mean Green outhit FIU, 9-7. FIU left 11 baserunners stranded on base.
North Texas will face either FAU or ULL at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 14.
