DENTON – Following a strong performance at the Kansas Classic, the Mean Green swim and dive team returns to action against another Big 12 foe on Saturday.
After placing third at the Kansas Classic in a six-team field behind hosts and winners the University of Kansas and Iowa State, North Texas will travel the short trip down I-35 to face Texas Christian University and Ouachita Baptist at 2 p.m. at the TCU Recreation Center in Fort Worth, TX.
The Mean Green wrapped competition last on November 18. Head coach Brittany Roth is excited for her team to get back in the water.
"Training is really important, but racing is fun," Roth said. "We're always working on ways to get better and we've done a great job but we are continuing to look for ways to get better for February. The girls have really implemented that mentality in their training. I'm really excited to get them back up and racing again and having fun again."
The Mean Green performed strongly in both individual and relay races in the Kansas Classic. In the 400-yard Freestyle Relay a team of Leigh Faires McGee, Brittany Thurstin, Jowita Sienczyk and Emmabeth Jensen turned in a fourth-place performance on the final day with a time of 3:26.36. Kelsey Opiela, Bryanna Vasquez, Karigan Stanley and Natalia Kwiatkowska rounded out the top 10 in the same event with a time of 3:32.32.
McGee turned in strong what was one of a handful of strong individual performances with two fourth place finishes, one in the 200-yard Freestyle final and another fourth spot in the 1650-Yard Freestyle on the final day of competition. Thurstin and McGee were both named to the All-Invite team in Kansas.
The Frogs and Mean Green have become familiar foes over the last couple seasons. Just last year the two schools faced off twice. The 2017 season opened with a dual-meet between the Mean Green, TCU and the University of Texas Permian Basin.
On senior night at the Pohl Recreation Center, North Texas downed the Horned Frogs in dominant fashion 202-89. The budding rivalry has recently swung in favor of North Texas, with the Mean Green winning three of the last four head-to-head meets against TCU.
"It's always about who can get their hand on the wall first, or who can get the best dive," Roth said. "This week is no different. Our girls want to make sure that we are well represented in the D-FW area. The coaching staff is just as excited. I think our girls get up a little bit more [for TCU], but that's something that's completely on them."
The Mean Green divers will get a shot in Fort Worth as well after two A-Final finishes on the final day of the Phill Hansel Invitational hosted by the University of Houston. Junior Gabryella Silva finished 12th with a 231.85 dive on day two, a new personal best.
Diving coach Mark Murdock gave his praises for Silva, and all his divers when in Houston.
Despite adversity, his team finished strong on the final day in Houston and will look to carry the momentum into Saturday.
