DeLong Recruits Austin Peay Assistants To Denton
DENTON - North Texas softball head coach Rodney DeLong rounded out his coaching staff with the hiring of Dillon Bryant and Jamie Allred as assistant coaches.
Bryant and Allred served in the same roles under DeLong in his lone season at Austin Peay last season, helping the Governors to a program-record 39 wins and snapping a 24-year streak of losing seasons.
"It's great to be able to keep our staff together," DeLong said. "What we were able to accomplish together in such a short amount of time at Austin Peay was really special. They are young and hungry coaches who fit perfect in this fast-paced, growing environment."
Denton will mark the third place Bryant and DeLong have worked together. Bryant served as a student and graduate assistant at Cameron from 2013-17. During his tenure, the Aggies posted a 138-79 overall record, including a single-season record 41 wins in 2015.
"Dillon is a loyal friend of mine and it means a lot to me when building a championship culture," DeLong said. "We have experienced success the whole way and that will continue here at North Texas."
A native of Cache, Okla., Bryant played baseball under DeLong at Cache High School. As a senior, he hit .461 with 11 triples and helped his team to the regional finals. Bryant was named to the Large School All-State team as a second baseman.
Bryant started his college career at Seward County Community College (Kansas), where he played in 19 games and hit .333 in 39 at bats as a freshman. He helped the 2011 squad to a Jayhawk Conference championship and a trip to the JUCO World Series, where the Saints finished fifth.
Allred, who will work with pitchers, began her coaching career as the pitching coach for DeLong at APSU after playing two seasons of professional softball overseas. She helped the Therwill Flyers (Basel, Switzerland) and Western Magpies (Auckland, New Zealand) to national titles in their respective countries.
"Jamie is an extremely hard worker and dedicated student of the game," DeLong said. "She's had wonderful mentors and is way ahead, mentally, of other coaches her age. I am excited and honored that she chose to join me at North Texas."
A four-year letterwinner at McNeese State, Allred graduated as the program's all-time leader in career wins (68) and shutouts (16) and single-season victories (27) and shutouts (10) in 2014. The 2014 Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year, she was named First Team All-Southland, First-Team All-Louisiana and Second-Team All-South Region.
In her final season with the Cowgirls, Allred led them to a school record 43 victories and the program's first NCAA Tournament berth in six seasons. She also became the sixth student-athlete in program history to earn Academic All-District honors.
