UNT Heads To Rice For Regular Season Finale
10/31/2019 9:47:00 AM | Women's Soccer
HOUSTON — The North Texas soccer team is off to Houston to play its final regular season match before they host the Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship.
The Mean Green (12-5-0, 7-2-0) will take on Rice (9-5-2, 6-1-2) Friday night at 7 p.m. with a top seed at the league tournament on the line. Friday's match will be broadcasted on CUSA.tv.
"Every time we play Rice it's a great match," said Mean Green junior Berklee Peters. "We were very happy with our last result and we want to make sure we end the year on a high note."
North Texas is coming off a 7-0 victory at FIU last Sunday to keep themselves tied with Charlotte for second-place in the league standings. However, right on their heels is the Rice Owls — one point behind the Mean Green and 49ers.
A first-place finish in the regular season standings is not out of the question for UNT, Charlotte and/or Rice.
A win by any of those teams and a tie or loss by Florida Atlantic — currently in first-place — would give them the regular season title.
FAU hosts FIU (2-14, 0-9) on Friday.
The Mean Green, who have played Rice every season since they joined C-USA in 2013, has not lost to the Owls since their defeat in 2013.
However, in their last two meetings the matches have been intense.
In 2017, North Texas was just two minutes away from losing to Rice who was at the time ranked No. 18 in the nation. But a cross into the box that was finished by then senior Cat Sebazco in the 88th minute tied the score at 1-1. The match went into double overtime and ended in a draw.
Then last year, North Texas went down a woman in the 63rd minute in a scoreless match. But in the 74th minute, UNT pulled off the unthinkable and scored a go-ahead short-handed goal and hold off Rice to win 1-0.
The eight-team C-USA Tournament begins on Nov. 6 in Denton.
