UNT Tied For Second Entering Last Day At Maridoe

CARROLLTON – The North Texas men's golf team battled tough conditions at the second round of the Maridoe Intercollegiate on Monday, as the field had to deal with a stiff north wind throughout the day, but the Mean Green left the day in position for a good day on Tuesday, as they are tied for second with two other teams and nine shots back of leader SMU.
Redshirt junior Kristof Ulenaers had the best day for the Mean Green on Monday, firing a second-round 74 after a 73 on Sunday to sit in a tie for eighth place at 3-over par. Sophomore Lenny Bergsson, who was UNT's top performer on Sunday, shot a 4-over 76 on Monday, while sophomore Robert Garcia had a 5-over 77. Ulenaers had a career-best finish of tied for 14th at UNT's tournament in New Mexico last week, and is on pace to set another high mark. He is leading the field in Par 4 scoring at 1-under on Par 4s over the first two rounds.
UNT is tied with Arkansas State and Texas A&M at 24-over par, while SMU is 15-over in first place with one round to play.
"The course was playing tough today with a north wind," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "Kristof had a solid round and is making huge strides in the right direction. Hopefully, we can come out firing tomorrow and see what happens."
The Mean Green will tee off Tuesday, starting at 9:10 a.m., with Zak Karkaletsos, in 10-minute increments ending with Ulenaers, who is scheduled to begin play at 9:50. They will be paired, for the second straight day, with SMU and Arkansas State.
