Mean Green Stay Unified All Through Kansas Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. – North Texas swimming concluded the Kansas Classic Sunday afternoon and will arrive back in Denton after taking fourth place as a team, junior Leigh Faires McGee and sophomore Alvena Walpole were both named to the All-Invitational team.

The Mean Green racked up 439 points over the three day event, the host University of Kansas took the team title with 1203.5 points.

"We had a great weekend of racing," head coach Brittany Roth said. "It was a real test at the half way mark to highlight the team's hard work this semester and to help us narrow in on the skills we need to hit hard in the back half of the season as we look forward to the Conference USA Championships in February."

As a team, the Mean Green placed 18 swimmers in the top-3 of their respected individual race finals including six appearances in A-Finals and 22 appearances in B-Finals.

"I enjoyed seeing our freshmen step up in their first prelims/finals format and I loved watching our upperclassmen show them the ropes on how to handle three consecutive days of racing."

At the end of day one North Texas sat in fifth place out of seven teams with 126 points. Friday's top swims included a fifth-place finish in the 200 Free Relay, McGee placing second in the B-Final of the 500 Free with a time of 4:57.02, Walpole winning the B-Final of the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.97, freshman Kaitlyn Carr clocking a 23.89 in the 50 Free for a fourth-place finish in the B-Final and a seventh-place team finish in the 400 Medley Relay.

The Mean Green had climbed into fourth place with 298.5 points by the end of day two on Saturday. Top swims of the day included an eighth-place team finish in the 200 Medley Relay, sophomore Karigan Stanley taking the top spot in the B-Final of the 400 IM with a time of 4:27.46, Carr securing a fourth-place finish in the B-Final of the 100 Fly with a time of 56.22, Walpole placing sixth in the A-Final of the 200 Free with a time of 1:50.97, freshman Jenny Holwell clocking a 1:05.07 in the 100 Breast for a second-place finish in the B-Final, senior Jowita Sienczyk placing seventh in the A-Final of the 100 Back with a time of 56.49 and a fourth place team finish in the 800 Free relay with a time of 7:28.56.

Day three's top-swims included am eighth-place finish in the 1650 Free by McGee with a time of 17:30.96, junior Robyn Lee taking first-place in the B-Final of the 200 Back with a time of 2:01.51, McGee taking sixth in the A-Final of the 100 Free with a time of 50.69, sophomore Brooke Beddingfield taking seventh-place in the A-Final of the 200 Breast with a time of 2:19.60, Walpole clocking a 2:02.84 in the A-Final of the 200 Fly which was good enough for a fourth-place finish and a fifth-place team finish in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:26.33.

"I'm proud of this team and how they stayed unified throughout the whole meet," Roth added. "They have really been putting in the necessary hard work and made the pool deck environment fun."

North Texas will be back in action of Dec. 7 when they host TCU for a dual-meet at the Pohl Recreation Center.
