DENTON – North Texas softball played the first of its final two fall games for 2019 against Vernon College on Tuesday night, defeating the Chaparrals 10-5.
Kourtney Williams tripled home three runs in the first and added a solo shot in the fifth. The junior has been showing signs of power all fall. The towering homer to left-center was her fourth of the fall.
"She could maybe be that offensive piece we missed last year if she continues to work," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "There's usually one or two players you don't necessarily count on coming in and they surprise you, Kourtney has had a great fall. Hopefully she continues to work."
Tarah Hilton, Tayla Evans and Lacy Gregory all added RBIs. Hilton doubled home a run, Evans tripled to score a runner while Gregory singled one home. Ariel Thompson got the start and went five innings of strong work. She allowed just two runs on five hits and struck out five.
"We wanted to give her a realistic start," DeLong said. "We wanted to let her throw longer than we have before. She did really well. I'm excited about her. She's really going to help us in the spring. She's put in the time. Coach Allred has done a great job with all these pitchers and it speaks to their work ethic."
She made way for Lauren Craine who worked a quick 1-2-3 inning in her first inning of two innings of work. Bailey Tindell relieved her with a five pitch 1-2-3 inning. Kailyn Berry worked a scoreless inning of work before Hope Trautwein did the same in the 10th.
Wednesday's game scheduled for 6 p.m. has been cancelled with no make-up date. The Mean Green will return to action in February when they open the regular season on February 7th on the road. The first home game will be on February 14th when North Texas hosts its annual tournament.
"I think at this point compared to last year we are deeper," DeLong said. "That will be very important in the spring with a long season and a tough schedule. I'm really looking forward to how we perform, this group prepares well. Now we've got a month or so to really heal and rest up. We are excited about the spring for sure."
