DENTON — The Mean Green made a program-record tying 19 3-pointers on Saturday in a 76-53 win over Little Rock at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (4-6) made 26 buckets on 23 assists in the win over their former Sun Belt Conference foe Trojans (5-5).
Redshirt sophomore Umoja Gibson tied a career-high with seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points. Junior James Reese set a career-high with four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.
North Texas' Roosevelt Smart made a season-high three 3-pointers on Saturday and with the third being the program-record tying triple —it's the most 3-pointers ever versus a division I opponent. It also gave Smart 189 career 3-pointers, which moved him into third-place in the program's all-time history.
"We're just connecting right now, and that's all I can say," Gibson said. "Coach has been over-emphasizing that in practice. Just moving the ball, finding the open man, and making the right reads. It's just starting to click now and we just got to collect these wins."
The Mean Green knocked down nine of their first 10 shots from beyond the arc — making their first six attempts.
Gibson — who entered the game averaging 19.6 points per game over the last five contests — led the charge once again. Gibson made his first five shots from beyond the 3-point line and finished with a season-high 23 points on 7 of 11 shooting.
The North Texas offense has found its footing as of late. They have averaged 77.7 points per game over the last three games.
"They just spend time in the gym and they love basketball," head coach Grant McCasland said about his team. "That's who we want as a part of our program and that's why this team will be good, because they are relentless workers."
North Texas' 23 assists on Saturday are the sixth-most in program history for a single game and the most under McCasland who is in his third season at UNT. Javion Hamlet led the team with eight assists, a career-high for the redshirt junior transfer.
"I felt like we were more physical than them," Reese said. "Coach gave us a great halftime talk and got everybody amped. We were just ready to guard and executed the plan."
North Texas has 10 days off before they travel to No. 19 Dayton on Dec. 17 for a 6 p.m. CT tip-off. It will be the first time the two schools have met.
