MGSB Heads To Ruston To Continue C-USA Play
3/22/2019 11:44:00 AM | Softball
RUSTON – After a tough midweek game with #2 Oklahoma, the North Texas softball team hits the road this for their first Conference USA series away from home in 2019. The Mean Green (16-10, 5-1 C-USA) will head to Ruston for a three-game set with Louisiana Tech.
Â
The Lady Techsters (21-7, 3-0 C-USA) come into the series riding a six-game winning streak. Head coach Rodney DeLong sees the weekend series as a pivotal one as the conference season plays out.
Â
"Long term when you get down to the end of the year, this series could determine who finishes first and second if we both continue to play well," DeLong said. "It's important that we are competitive in every game, we obviously want to win every game and win the series but we have to take it one game at a time."
Â
While the Mean Green bats are hitting at a .294 mark, which ranks third best in the conference, the pitching staff will look to contain a Louisiana Tech lineup that boasts a .289 team batting average, while slugging at a .412 mark.
Â
"Louisiana Tech has a pretty complete lineup," DeLong said. "Their first five or six hitters are the real deal. They're aggressive, they can run the bases and hit the long ball. It's definitely going to be a great challenge for us."
Â
North Texas is looking to bounce back from a tough game on Wednesday against the #2 Sooners, one which saw the Mean Green get no-hit.Â
Â
DeLong focused on allowing the team to find perspective moving forward.
Â
"We need to put things into perspective mentally and physically," DeLong said. "It's about growing, we have to grow, get better and make adjustments."
Â
The Mean Green are looking to win in Ruston for the first time since the two programs became Conference USA foes. North Texas claimed a home sweep against the Lady Techsters in 2018, but have historically struggled in Ruston.Â
Â
"Every weekend is a new challenge," DeLong said.
Â
The three-game series begins on Saturday, March 23rd with a doubleheader set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., with the series finale set for Sunday the 24th at noon. All action will take place at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
Â
The series will be carried on CUSA.tv with live stats being available along with live tweets from @MeanGreenSB.
