Softball Faces FIU In Miami
3/29/2019 10:00:00 AM | Softball
MIAMI – After falling in a mid-week game for the second week in a row, North Texas softball looks to bounce back in in Conference USA play. Last weekend, the Mean Green (18-12, 7-2) bounced back from a loss to Oklahoma and won a three-game series against C-USA favorite Louisiana Tech.
Â
This weekend the Mean Green hope to replicate that success in a three-game series against Florida International. FIU (18-15, 0-6) sits last place in the East Division while the Mean Green lead the West.
Â
Head coach Rodney DeLong was disappointed in his team after the run-rule result on the road against Abilene Christian, but knows his team can respond this weekend.
Â
"We've responded well in practice after mid-week losses," DeLong said. "I think a new team is going to show up this weekend. We are ready to avenge our performance from midweek."Â
FIU is the only team in C-USA to not win a game in conference play in 2019. The Golden Panthers sport an athletic lineup and will not be afraid to force the issue on the base paths. While FIU sports the league's second-lowest batting average, hits, lowest OBP, runs and RBI, they find a way to get on base.
Â
The Golden Panthers have stolen 36 bases this season and only been caught seven times while attempting the fifth most steals in C-USA with 43. FIU is held up by stellar defense, checking in with a .969 team fielding percentage and only committing 28 errors. Both are top three in C-USA. DeLong hopes his team can play a clean defensive series. The Mean Green have improved on early season errors in the field, and played a clean weekend in the team's series win over LA Tech, committing just two errors in three games.
Â
"The heat and humidity will be a bit higher," DeLong said. "But we've prepared the same way we always have. We'll have to pitch, defend better. [FIU] has a very athletic lineup. They get on base. They do things a little different but I like their style of play. It fits their lineup. We'll have to be more productive offensively."Â
