BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Top-seeded North Texas fell to No. 4 Marshall 1-0 in the Air Force Reserve Conference USA Softball Championship semi-final Thursday.
It was the second loss to Marshall by a 1-0 score line in as many days ending the deepest conference tournament run in program history. North Texas ends the 2019 season 35-19 with a 19-5 mark in C-USA play, both program records.
Head coach Rodney DeLong had praise for his team after a historic 2019 season.
"We're proud of this team in general, proud of our seniors," DeLong said. "I couldn't be happier to be at North Texas. We've got great things to build on. They set a great foundation for our program moving forward. We're excited about our future and ready to get right back to work."
The game was scoreless into the sixth inning after a strong start from freshmen Bailey Tindell. Marshall eventually broke the stalemate when Aly Harrell lifted a solo home run to left field giving The Herd a 1-0 lead they would not reliquinsh.
Tindell was strong in her only appearance in the tournament, going 5.1 innings allowing just the one run on five hits striking out two. Hope Trautwein entered in relief pitching 1.2 innings and escaping two bases loaded jams. She struck out two.
In the tournament Tratuwein pitched 15.2 innings allowing just three runs on seven hits while striking out 10 in two starts and a relief appearance. Both starts were complete games.
"We pitched well enough to win," DeLong said. "I didn't think we'd get shutout twice but we did. Unfortunately, we didn't hit well this week. Bailey and Hope were awesome. I'm proud of their development and the things they fought through. It's very promising moving forward with the success those two had."
Entering the tournament, the Mean Green sat at 55 in the RPI polls. An at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament is not out of the question. The full 64-team bracket for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Sunday May 12.
