SAN ANTONIO — The Mean Green Soccer team got back to its winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory at Incarnate Word while battling the intense heat.
North Texas' Berklee Peters scored two goals on Sunday, which was the junior's 15th and 16th of her career. Desiree Ramirez scored the other goal for UNT (4-2). It was the freshman Duncanville native's first career goal.
"It was a difficult game for both teams playing in this crazy heat," said head coach John Hedlund. "Berklee came up big for us with two goals and Desiree scored on a really nice corner for us to secure the 3-0 win.
"Overall I thought the defense played extremely well this weekend only giving up one goal," he added also referring to UNT's match on Friday at No. 18 Memphis.
Just six matches into the season, the Mean Green offense is still evolving after its two top goal scorers from a season ago graduated. But Sunday's match once again showed that Peters appears to be one of next best offensive weapons in Conference USA.
A third-team all-conference selection last season as a sophomore, Peters entered this season as the team's active leading career goal scorer and has taken the reins of that role early on. Her now five goals this season already ties her with her freshman season total and is just one shy of what she scored all of last year when she was named all-conference.
Every match this season Peters has been one of the top offense threats for UNT. Her 21 shots on the year leads the Mean Green. Her 12 shots on goal is twice as many as the next most on the team. On Sunday Peters only took two shots but scored every time.
Her first shot came in the 12th minute as she, snuck behind the UIW (1-4) defense and centered a perfect pass from classmate Logan Bruffett and blasted the shot past Incarnate Word's keeper. The goal was North Texas' quickest of the year.
The offense quickly opened up for North Texas after the early goal. They struck again in the 33rd minute when Ramirez, who normally doesn't take corner kicks, bent in a corner kick into the top left corner of the net for the goal.
Ramirez is the fifth different Mean Green freshman to score so far this season.
After holding UIW to just a few attacks in the first half UNT took its 2-0 lead into the second half where once again the offense quickly put pressure on the Cardinals and the defense didn't allow anything to get by them. UIW attempted just one shot in the second half.
In the 55th minute, sophomore Olivia Klein was taken down in the box, which led to an Elle Marie DeFrain penalty kick. DeFrain's high shot was just tipped away over the goal by the UIW keeper but it would not be the last attack from North Texas.
Allie Byrd, Brooke Lampe, Bruffett, Klein and even defender Dominque James kept the attack on UIW.
James, UNT's all-American defender, who scored her one career goal as a freshman, twice on Sunday nearly found the back of the net. James took aim at goal twice on free kicks from roughly 40 yards out and both times required the UIW keeper to make leaping saves.
Peters eventually scored her second goal of the match in the 68th minute. Off of a corner kick, Peters leaped in the air for a ball that was ricocheted while trying to be cleared. She headed it past the UIW keeper for her second goal of the match. Sunday marked Peters' second multi-goal performance of the year and her fifth of her career.
North Texas returns home on Friday to host Grambling State at 7 p.m.
The Mean Green have won 10 straight at home and are riding a 21 consecutive home match unbeaten streak.
