Golf Set For First Tournament Of Year

The North Texas men's golf team returns to action after a hiatus following the final tournament of the fall season in early November.
THE EVENT: The North Ranch Country Club will play at 6,992 yards, and will be a par-72 course for the tournament. The two-day event begins Monday with 36 holes and concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes. There will be a tee times beginning at 9:45 a.m. both days from Holes 1 and 10.
THE FIELD: There are 12 teams participating in the tournament: No. 10 Arizona State, Augusta, No. 4 BYU, No. 34 California, No. 29 LSU, North Texas, No. 6 Pepperdine, San Jose State, No. 27 Stanford, UC Davis, No. 18 UCLA and No. 43 USC.
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Viktor Forslund, Kristof Ulenaers, Lenny Bergsson, Zak Karkaletsos and Robert Garcia.
RESULTS: Live results will be posted on GolfStat.com. Full recaps from each day of competition will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day's play.
LAST TIME OUT: North Texas finished 13th at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Hawai'i back in November to wrap up the fall season. The Mean Green were led by Forslund, who tied for 36th after he shot a career-best 65 in the final round to wrap up the tournament.
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The Mean Green feature seven international players this year, including some key freshmen who are expected to contribute immediately. Lenny Bergsson (Iceland), Viktor Forslund (Sweden), Cameron Harlock (New Zealand), Zak Karkaletsos (Spain), Alejandro Madariaga (Mexico), Hiroki Miya (New Zealand) and Kristof Ulenaers (Belgium) round out the international players.
STRACKE SAYS: "The Southwestern presents a great opportunity to play against some of the top-ranked teams in the country," UNT coach Brad Stracke said. "I hope we start the spring like finished our last round in the fall."
UP NEXT: The Mean Green will take a few weeks off before returning to action in Palm Desert, California, to play in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Feb. 21-23.
HOME SWEET MARIDOE: North Texas enjoys its home course -- the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton. The course opened to members in July 2017 and gives the Mean Green a state-of-the-art home course with world-class facilities, including a fully-dedicated practice facility, complete with a two-ended driving range to account for many varying wind conditions, a sprawling three-acre short game retreat and indoor facilities with state-of-the-art hitting bays that provide tools the program has not yet had at its disposal.
