As softball season approaches, North Texas will be playing as defending Conference champions for the first time in program history and coming out of the historic season the Mean Green will return 13 players from that championship roster. This is part two of a three-part series detailing the returners and newcomers in each position group.
Â
The Mean Green will return four players who saw time on the infield last season including preseason All-Conference selection Lacy Gregory and 2019 All-Freshman team member Tayla Evans.
Â
Gregory has started 161 games for North Texas since arriving on campus in the fall of 2016. The senior hit .319 last season with 14 doubles, a triple, five home runs on 52 hits. She also drove in a team high 43 runs while slugging at a .509 clip and posting a .426 OBP. The Kingwood native also posted a .917 fielding percentage en route to earning NFCA All-South region honors.
Â
Evans returns after posting the best season among North Texas freshmen in 2019. The Collinsville native started 46 games and hit .331 which was second-best on the team. She drove 29 runs and hit five home runs along with seven doubles while slugging at a .504 clip and posting a .430 OBP and her .988 fielding percentage is the highest among returning infielders.
Â
Also returning are a trio of Juniors who all saw limited time in 2019. Kourtney Williams will see time in both the infield and outfield this season after appearing in 27 games last season mostly in a reserve role. Bri Valdez appeared in just 10 game last season scoring four runs as she was mainly used in a pinch-running role. Miranda Holguin will return after missing all of 2019 due to injury, as a freshman in 2018 Holguin appeared in 34 games and hit .154 while posting a .940 fielding percentage.
Â
Joining the Infield are a group of freshmen all originally hailing from Texas, Candain Callahan (Canyon), Payton Deaton (Pottsboro), Saleen Donohoe (Duncanville), Toni Gonzalez (El Paso) and Meagan Youngman (Mesquite).
Â
Callahan and Youngman can be seen up the middle while Deaton, Donohoe and Gonzalez will be featured on the corners, Amarys Miller-Godsey and Ariel Thompson will also see time on the corners.
