CARROLLTON – Freshman Vicente Marzilio was one of five golfers to shoot under par on a tough course setup and led the Mean Green to a stellar opening round at the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational on Sunday at Maridoe Golf Club.
Making his collegiate debut, Marzilio fired four birdies on the day and finished at 1-under 71 as the Mean Green shot a 12-over 300 to put them in second place heading into the second round Monday, just one shot off the leader, No. 10 Baylor. UNT is two shots up on third-place Pepperdine, which ended last season as GolfStat's top-ranked team in the country. The Mean Green are three shots up on No. 4 Texas, which sits in fourth place.
"Vicente played exceptional golf today," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said of Marzilio, who is in a tie for third place after one round. "Mentally, he was in every shot, and it was fun to watch."
The first, and last, tournament of the fall schedule for the Mean Green features a field loaded with top-notch programs, including the top four teams nationally in last season's final rankings, No. 10 Baylor and three other top-40 teams.
Fellow freshman Diego Prone, who was also making his collegiate debut, is in a tie for 13th place after the opening round after he shot a 3-over 75. Prone was tied for first in the field with 15 pars. Senior Viktor Forslund is tied for 29th after shooting a 5-over 77 and had 14 pars, and junior Lenny Bergsson matched him after birdies on 16 and 17 got him in the clubhouse at 5-over par.
"I am proud of how the guys fought today through the adversity," Stracke said. "The course was playing very difficult."
