CARROLLTON – After ending the opening round of the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational in second place on Sunday, the North Texas men's golf team improved on its Sunday score by two shots but fell three spots on the leaderboard after shooting a 10-over 298 to enter the final round on Tuesday in fifth place at 22-over, but well within striking distance of leader Oklahoma State (+16).
On the day, the Mean Green were led by freshman Diego Prone's 2-over 74, which was matched by senior Viktor Forslund. Freshman Vicente Marzilio shot a 3-over 75 and is still the top UNT player on the leaderboard in a tie for seventh at 2-over entering the final round. Prone is next in line – tied for 18th at 5-over. Junior Lenny Bergsson matched Marzilio with a 75, and he's tied for 28th at 8-over. Forslund is tied for 25th at 7-over.
"We played solid again today," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "The guys are showing a lot of grit and fight."
The first, and last, tournament of the fall schedule for the Mean Green features a field loaded with top-notch programs, including the top four teams nationally in last season's final rankings, No. 10 Baylor and three other top-40 teams.
Now, Stracke hopes his team can use their home-course advantage to turn in a great round on Tuesday to finish out the fall season.
"We know this golf course well," he said. "It's all about execution tomorrow."
