DENTON – North Texas improved to 7-1 on the young season and 3-0 on the weekend with a pair of wins on Saturday. The Mean Green downed Abilene Christian 6-0 in the afternoon before having their second walk-off win in as many nights in the night cap over Missouri State.
Â
"Our kids are tough," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "They know how to win these types of games and these games are going to go a long way for us as the season goes on."
Â
North Texas will finish out home tournament action on Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. affair with the UT Martin Skyhawks. Fans can still purchase tickets for Sunday's game through the North Texas ticket office or at the gate of Lovelace Stadium.
Â
Game Two – North Texas 2, Missouri State 1
North Texas and Missouri State got locked into an old-fashioned pitcher's duel between each team's ace. Hope Trautwein went a career-high tying 8.0 innings for the Mean Green while only surrendering one earned run on five hits while striking out nine.
Â
"We faced a great pitcher," Delong said. "We had really gritty at-bats throughout the game and the kids fought, didn't get discouraged and continued to battle her."
Â
The Bears struck first in the opening frame by taking advantage of a pair of Trautwein wild pitches that followed two singles. North Texas would respond with a leadoff triple from Katie Clark to open the bottom half of the inning, but the Mean Green would not be able to push the tying run across.
Â
That tying run didn't come for the Mean Green until the third inning when Tayla Evans would drive in Clark with a single after her leadoff walk followed by a double from Tarah Hilton.
Â
The two pitchers would then go to work, with neither arm surrendering a hit from the fourth through sixth innings. North Texas would break the hitless streak up with a Candain Callahan double with two outs in the seventh but would not be able to score her, forcing an extra frame.
Â
Missouri State would threaten to take the lead in the top of the eighth but Hanna Rebar would gun down the go ahead runner at home plate for the third out to send the Mean Green to the dish with a chance to win.
Â
A pair of singles from Hilton and Gregory would lead off the frame before a sacrifice bunt from Evans put the winning run at third base with Rebar coming to the dish. The senior would single to center field to cap off the late night affair at Lovelace Stadium and send North Texas fans home happy.
Â
"Rebar is a kid that's growing up," Delong said. "She had a rough first inning, and handled a little adversity to come back with some big plays late in the game."
Â
Game One – North Texas 6, Abilene Christian 0
North Texas would strike early against the Wildcats and be powered by the bat of Hilton to get their second win of the weekend to open Saturday.
Â
The Mean Green struck for three runs in the first, Hilton doubled home Clark before Evans tripled her home and then scored with Hanna Rebar reaching on a fielder's choice.
Â
North Texas would get another run off the bat of Hilton with her second home run of the season in the third inning before she blasted her third on the year in the fifth, this time in the form of the two-run variety.
Â
The Mean Green tandem of Bailey Tindell and Ariel Thompson would combine to hold the Wildcats to just three hits. Tindell earned her second win of the year with a 3.0 inning performance while only allowing two hits. Thompson picked up her second save of the season going 4.0 innings, while only allowing one hit and striking out six.
