Mean Green Lose In Final Second
2/22/2020 5:51:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DENTON — Louisiana Tech's all-conference guard Daquan Bracey made a contested layup with 1.1 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs the lead and the eventual 73-71 win Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit.
Bracey's layup came immediately following North Texas' Javion Hamlet's go-ahead and-one layup and free throw with 24 seconds remaining.
Despite the loss, UNT (18-10, 12-3 C-USA) remains in first place of the Conference USA standings as Western Kentucky lost at home to Charlotte on a game-winning layup by the 49ers.. LA Tech and WKU are tied for second place, a game behind UNT.
"Our hats are off to LA Tech," Hamlet said. "We both made big shots but they made the last one. There's a lot we could have done better. We'll get better because of this."
Saturday's game was the second time UNT and Louisiana Tech had played this year and it was the second time it came down to a game-winning shot. On Jan. 18, Hamlet made a buzzer-beating floater in Ruston, Louisiana, for the program's first win at LA Tech since 1952.
Hamlet once again showed why he's in contention for the Conference USA Player of the Year as he finished with 25 points and four assists. He scored 10 points in the final five minutes of the game.
But there were two free throws that Hamlet could not get over.
"Every conference game comes down to a few small details," Hamlet said. "I missed two free throws tonight. We lost by two. But I'll get better and we as a team will get better"
Hamlet entered Saturday's game shooting 90 percent form the free throw line in conference play. He was five-of-seven at the line on Saturday.
UNT will now head to Florida International on Thursday for a 6 p.m. CT scheduled tip-off. The game will be broadcasted on the Mean Green Sports Network and Stadium on Facebook. The Panthers will have last played on Feb. 15.
