DENTON — The Mean Green tennis team is back home after a two-match conference road trip. North Texas (7-4) will host South Florida (3-4) on Thursday at 2 p.m. and Memphis (5-4) at noon on Saturday.
UNT is one of the youngest teams in Conference USA and in the state of Texas. This past week the youth gained valuable experience and showed great maturity to be able to help the team later in the year win a conference championship by saving match points and making comeback victories. This week, North Texas will be tested again with a pair of difficult American Athletic Conference opponents.
"We're playing good tennis and with the right spirit," said head coach Sujay Lama. "Our focus is on the details and execution."
UNT is a perfect 6-0 at home this year. Two more victories this week over stiff competition could really springboard the team as it heads down the homestretch of the 2020 regular season.
This will be the third all-time meeting between North Texas and South Florida. The two teams have split the first two matches. In both matches the final score was 4-3. North Texas won the most recent match on Jan. 19, 2018. Thursday's match will be exactly four years to the day when the teams first ever met on Feb. 27, 2016.
North Texas and Memphis have a little more history. Saturday will be the two teams' eighth all-time meeting. North Texas has won four of the previous seven match ups. UNT beat Memphis last year in Memphis, 4-3. 2019 senior Maria Kononova had the match-clinching victory.
Of all returners, Alexandra Heczey is the only one who picked up a singles victory in last year's match. Heczey beat her Tigers opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
"These are two quality opponents and we get to play them at home," Lama said. "We are excited for the opportunity."
