Softball Senior Day
5/3/2020 11:00:00 AM | Softball
The Mean Green were fresh off their first Conference USA series win of the season and were gearing up for a home series against Western Kentucky, however the COVID-19 pandemic brought an end to that preparation and an ultimate end to the 2020 softball season. The premature ending brought to an end the careers of eight North Texas seniors who did not get to experience all that their senior seasons had promised them.
"This group of seniors played an essential role in elevating North Texas softball," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "I am forever indebted to them as they accepted our staff with open arms. It was disappointing to not get to finish out our season as we were about to accomplish even more. I am proud to have coached them and look forward to seeing what they do from here."
Â
One main event that was called to cancellation due to the season's ending was the annual senior day, which would have been before the first pitch of game three against UAB on May 3. In light of that cancellation and all the other milestones missed due to COVID-19, meangreensports.com wants to reflect on the time spent with the 2020 senior class and look forward as to the all-important question; what's next?
2020 North Texas Softball Senior Class
Â
Katie Clark will leave Denton as one of the most decorated players in program history. The Katy native graduates as the school record holder for career batting average (.384). She also posted the program's single-best season batting average in 2019 (.404), which led Conference USA. Clark arrived in Denton in 2018 from Stephen F. Austin and made an immediate impact as she went on to be named Conference USA's newcomer of the year as well as second team all-conference. Clark led the Mean Green in hits and batting average in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and was named preseason all-conference in 2019 and 2020, while earning a first team all-conference nod in 2019.
Â
With integrative studies focuses in management, sociology and communication, Katie will be pursuing a career as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative post-graduation.
Â
Lauren Craine graduates after a long road of setbacks and injuries that led to her long-awaited return as a redshirt senior in 2020. The Aledo native came to Denton before the 2016 season after back-to-back state titles at Aledo high school. Craine made her debut against then No. 13 Arizona working 3.1 innings of relief, her first win came in relief against then No. 21 Baylor in Waco. After missing the 2018 and 2019 seasons due to injury, Lauren completed her comeback on Feb. 8 of this year when she hurled the final inning against Arkansas-Pine Bluff to seal a Mean Green victory.
Â
Lauren's integrative studies focuses are in marketing, kinesiology and communication. She will be pursuing a grad school tenure with plans for a career in either sports management or sports broadcasting.
Â
Katie Dietrich joined the Mean Green in 2020 after a stint as one of the team's student managers. The Keller native was also a two-time state champion in high school and brought that experience with her into her one shortened year of collegiate competition. Dietrich made her collegiate debut on Feb. 16 and made three appearances for the Mean Green.
Â
Katie will be pursuing a career in real estate development and city planning.
Â
Camille Grahmann appeared in the fourth-most games among the 2020 seniors, making 135 appearances in a North Texas uniform. The slap-hitter tallied a career on-base percentage of .317 in 224 at-bats. While she drove in just four runs in 2020, her biggest RBI came on Feb. 29 when the Mean Green knocked off Oklahoma for the first time in program history. Her single to left field drove in the first North Texas run of the day and sparked the Mean Green offense to the historic victory.
Â
Camille will be heading to graduate school with plans to become a licensed speech pathologist.
Â
Lacy Gregory leaves North Texas after making the most appearances and starts among the 2020 seniors. The Kingwood native finished her career ranked in the top-five of three different career school records while holding one single-game record. Gregory ranks third all-time in career RBI (124) and doubles (40) while ranking fifth in career triples (5). The 2019 and 2020 preseason all-conference honoree holds the school record for single game RBI when she drove in eight on Feb. 8, 2018. Gregory was honored by the NFCA by being named second team all-south region in 2019 and led the Mean Green in RBI in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Â
Lacy's integrative studies focuses are in business, kinesiology and sociology and is still weighing her post-graduation options.
Â
Nicole Ochotnicki departs North Texas after making 171 starts for the Mean Green, most of them behind the dish. With a career .983 fielding percentage, Nicole recorded 834 putouts during her time with the Mean Green. A quiet competitor on the field, Nicole made waves in the classroom at North Texas earning 2019 All-Academic team distinction while also being named to the Conference USA Commissioner's List Honor Roll and earning the Commissioner's Academic Medal in 2018 and 2019.
Â
Nicole will be heading to Physical Therapy school at Texas Tech upon graduation.
Â
Hanna Rebar leaves North Texas as one of the program's more premiere power hitters. The San Antonio native posted a career slugging percentage of .479 and posted the fourth best single-season slugging percentage in 2020 (.710). Rebar set school records in home runs and total bases on Mar. 23, 2019 at Louisiana Tech when she hit a trio of home runs and accounted for a dozen bases. Rebar graduates third all-time in career walks (75), fifth in career home runs (29) and tied for fourth all-time in career multi-RBI games (28).
Â
Hanna's integrative studies focuses are in kinesiology, communication and business and has plans to become a high school teacher and coach.
Â
Kenzie Young came to Denton after a two-year stint at Butler Community College in her hometown of Derby, Kansas. While at Butler, Young was a national champion and earned NJCAA All-American honors in 2017 and 2018. Young appeared in just 65 games for the Mean Green due to the shortened 2020 season but played a major role in the culture change in Denton. She posted a career on-base percentage of .331 and a .927 fielding percentage while making 74 putouts in the outfield while also being a threat on the base paths as she swiped 13 bags in 16 attempts.
Â
Kenzie's integrative studies focuses are in psychology, management and nutrition and is planning on becoming a college softball coach but is waiting on an opportunity to break into the profession.
