FT. WORTH — The North Texas tennis team begins the most important tournament of the fall season Thursday when they head down to TCU and begin the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's Texas Regional.
A five-day tournament that features the region's best, the champions of the single and doubles draw earn automatic bids into the NCAA Championship.
"The regional is the highlight of our fall portion of our schedule," said UNT head coach Sujay Lama. "This is where we want to peak and see where we stand in our region."
The Mean Green recently have had fond memories at the regional. In 2018, UNT's Tamuna Kutubidze and Maria Kononova won the doubles title becoming the first in program history to take home a regional title. Additionally, others recently have had success at the tournament and then gone on to have great dual match spring seasons.
The Texas Region is thought of as one of the most talented and difficult regions in the nation. The tournament is a great platform to gauge where the team is against the state's best.
North Texas has had a strong fall season that's helped them earn favorable draws in this year's regional.
Senior Lucie Devier is the No. 6 seeded player in the singles qualifying draw and earned a first round bye. Freshman Jasmin Adams has shined this fall and due to her success has found herself starting in the main draw with teammate Maria Ponomareva.
In doubles, the Mean Green have three teams and they all will begin the tournament on Friday against familiar opponents including Conference USA rival UTSA.
"We have put in quality work and now it's about trusting and believing," Lama said. Embrace the pressure and going for our shots."
