Each team will be competing against their toughest opponents yet
DENTON, Texas — North Texas Swimming and Diving will be back in the water this weekend for mid-season championships, but they will be in separate states. Diving kicks things off with the Phil Hansel Invite in Houston on Thursday, and the swim squad will follow them at the Kansas Classic on Friday.
The Phil Hansel Invite features divers competing in the 1-Meter on Thursday, the 3-Meter on Friday and the Platform on Saturday all at the CRWC Natatorium. The Mean Green have put on a show from the boards so far this season, with junior Saylor Hawkins earning three Conference USA Diver of the Week awards and both Hawkins and junior Altaira Wallquist earning spots at Zone Championships.
Swimmers will be in Lawrence, Kans. competing against teams like Iowa State and the hometown Jayhawks. UNT has yet to drop a dual meet this season, and while this meet features tougher competition than they've faced in the past two months, head coach Brittany Roth said it gives them the best chance to prepare for the second half of the season.
"Getting to go to the Kansas Classic gives us a chance to race against some really strong teams," Roth said. "It's going to be a tight, close meet which is exactly what we want to replicate for our conference championship experience. It's a great rehearsal for the kind of team we want to be — the kind of competitors we want to be — so we can prepare and be ready for conference."
