DENTON – A pair of NCAA Zone qualifications on the boards and 12 wins in the pool powered North Texas to a 178-99 win over Little Rock on Saturday morning. The win closed out the regular season for the Mean Green who will now turn their attention to the 2021 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Â
"Today was a really strong day for both our swimmers and our divers," head coach Brittany Roth said. "They are pretty beat up right now during their current training cycle, my message for the team this week was fighting and do whatever you can to leave it all in the pool. We know when we get to conference and it's a three-day meet they'll not always be at their best and we're working through that and embracing the opportunity."
Â
Senior Meghan Miller and junior Altaira Wallquist both qualified for the NCAA Zone championships in the one-meter. The Zone Championships are the pre-qualifier for divers to get to the NCAA Championships.
Â
"Meghan had an all-around great meet with qualifying as well as posting a personal best on the three-meter," diving coach Mark Murdock said. "Altaira has a fantastic one-meter performance to secure her personal best as well as qualifying."
Â
Junior Alvena Walpole led the way for the Mean Green in the pool with three individual wins. The San Antonio native claimed wins in the 100 and 200 fly as well as the 200 IM with times of 58.34, 2:06.15 and 2:10.68 respectively. Freshman Diana Kolb and senior Leigh Faires McGee both contributed a pair of wins, Kolb swept the 100 and 200 backstroke races (58.87/2:06.84) while McGee took home the 500 and 1000 freestyles (5:13.28/10:37.31). McGee's two wins gave her 47 individual wins in her career.
Â
"Alvena had a fantastic day, I was really impressed," Roth said. "She kind of got hit with some COVID protocol going into the fall semester so I know that kind of put her back a little bit, but she really has bounced back and come with a vengeance."
Â
North Texas got out to a hot start with wins in the first four events including the 400 medley relay, 1000 free, 200 free and 100 back, Junior Bryanna Vasquez picked up the win during the 200 free with a time of 1:55.88. Senior Micayla Morgan picked up a win in the 50 free with a time of 24.58 and sophomore Jenny Holwell took a win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:26.93. The Mean Green would end the day with a win in the 200 freestyle relay.
Â
The Mean Green will be back in action at the 2021 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta, Georgia from February 24-27. The Diving Zone Championship information will be made available at a later date.
