ABILENE – Tuesday DerMargosian became the first player in program history to register a five-hit game and the Mean Green accounted for a season-high in hits and runs as they downed Abilene Christian 11-2 on Tuesday night. North Texas will continue the 2021 campaign as they open Conference USA play on Friday against UAB.
"Any time you play on the road it's tough," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We're going through some things as a team and I think we're heading in a good direction, I thought that last week at Oklahoma State. We're putting in good work, doing the right things and I still think our best softball is ahead of us and maybe this is a sign of where we're headed."
Four different players had multi-hit games highlighted by DerMargosian's five-hit effort, Tayla Evans and Ashlyn Walker both tallied three hits as Mikayla Smith added a pair. DerMargosian also hit her first career home run to go along with a double and three singles as North Texas tied the single-game program record with eight doubles on the night from six different players.
"We had some great individual performances from a lot of kids, Tuesday was locked in tonight," DeLong added. "Making really good swings and really she's been hitting. It's good to see her get hot. Just moving into the UAB weekend it's good to build some confidence and get going."
Ariel Thompson got the start in the circle as she went 2.0 innings allowing just two runs on two hits and striking out a pair. GiGi Wall picked up her eight win of the season with 4.0 innings of relief in which she didn't allow a hit, issued on walk and struck out four. Janie Worthington added a perfect inning of relief in which she struck out a pair.
The Mean Green got the scoring started early with a trio of runs in the first after back-to-back doubles from Molly Rainey and DerMargosian to start things off. An RBI triple from Evans and an RBI groundout from Rayna Lewis put North Texas ahead 3-0 early.
ACU would capitalize on a Mean Green error to respond with a run in the first and then a solo home run in the second would make it a 3-2 contest. DerMargosian would quickly get the two runs back with her first career home run, a two-run shot that scored Rainey. A double from Evans and Walker would make it 6-2 in favor of the Mean Green.
The teams would trade scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth before North Texas added three more in the sixth. A double from Smith and walk to Rainey would set up DerMargosian for her fourth hit and RBI of the game on a single to center plating Smith before Evans' second double of the night drove in Rainey and DerMargosian.
A Maia Wark double and DerMargosian's fifth hit of the night put the Mean Green up 11-2 in the seventh before Worthington set the Wildcats down in order to complete the win.
