Tennis Falls To FAU In First Round

DENTON — The North Texas tennis team lost 4-1 to Florida Atlantic Thursday afternoon in the first round of the 2021 C-USA Championship.
The Mean Green (6-13) who were the 12th seed in the tournament earned their one point from junior Maria Ponomareva who beat her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
"It's a tough way to end the year but give FAU credit," said head coach Sujay Lama. "This was a challenging year for everyone and I'm proud of our team for battling through everything,"
The top of UNT's lineup hung tough with the fifth seeded Owls (9-6). Senior Nidhi Surapaneni who played in the No. 3 position led in the second set just a few points away from winning her match, however, FAU clinched the win before she could finish.
The Mean Green nearly grabbed the doubles point.
After the two schools split on court one and two in doubles, it all came down to court three where Kexuan Zhou and Sophia Hummel battled with the Owls to a tiebreak. In the 6-6 tiebreak, UNT and FAU went back-and-forth but the Owls captured the final two points of the tiebreak to win the match and the doubles point. The early lead gave FAU a much needed boost headed into singles where they'd capitalize.
