DENTON — The 2021 Conference USA regular season champion North Texas softball team has signed UAB transfer Jaycee Cook to its roster.
A Mansfield native who graduated from Legacy High School in 2019, Cook appeared in 35 career games for the Blazers and made 17 starts over the last two seasons. She compiled a 9-3 career record at UAB and pitched 101.2 innings with 60 strikeouts.
Cook has experience pitching at Lovelace Stadium. This past year she pitched a total of 6.2 innings over two games during a series at UNT. Soon after facing the Mean Green, Cook went the distance against UTEP for her third career complete game. She pitched two shutouts in the shortened 2020 season, including a one-hit shutout versus Louisiana Monroe.
When she graduated from Legacy High School, Cook was the school's all-time leader in strikeouts, single-season strikeouts and single-game strikeouts. She was the 2019 District Pitcher of the Year and was named Texas Girls Softball Association All-State.
She'll join the Mean Green with three years of eligibility remaining.
UNT went 38-12 last year and 18-2 in conference play. They ended the regular season winning 18 straight league games. Head coach Rodney DeLong was named the 2021 Conference USA Coach of the Year. The Mean Green also earned Pitcher of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. In total eight UNT softball student-athletes were voted all-conference. UNT was the No. 1 seed in the 2021 C-USA Tournament.
