DENTON — North Texas softball 2021 graduate Hope Trautwein has been nominated for the 2020-21 NCAA Woman of the Year.
Trautwein spent the last four years rewriting the UNT softball record books. However during the 2021 season she gained national attention for becoming the first NCAA softball student-athlete to pitch a perfect game with all 21 outs being strikeouts. Trautwein then used her platform to bring more attention to women sports and specifically to her beloved softball.
Along with her success on the field, Trautwein graduated from North Texas with a 3.80 grade point average and a degree in accounting from the esteemed G. Brint Ryan College of Business. Furthermore, during her four years in Denton she volunteered a total of 50 weeks at various organizations for different causes such as cancer research and children's hospital.
For 31 years, the NCAA has honored the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of outstanding female college athletes. Rooted in Title IX and directed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, the NCAA Woman of the Year program celebrates the accomplishments of female college athletes across all three NCAA divisions. Over 220,000 women are competing in college sports.
The selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division from the Top 30, and the nine finalists will be announced this fall. From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will choose the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year later this fall.
Incoming UNT soccer goalkeeper Sarah Fuller has also been named a nominee of the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year. Prior to coming to North Texas, Fuller was a student-athlete at Vanderbilt.
