DENTON — The North Texas soccer team will host the first UNT Athletics home event of the 2021-22 school year with a Wednesday night exhibition match versus defending SEC regular season champs No. 9 Texas A&M.
First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT from the UNT Soccer & Track and Field Complex. Admission to the match is free to the public.
The Mean Green (RV) enter the 2021 season with championship expectations, which has become the norm with the program. From 2014-2019, North Texas won either the Conference USA regular season and/or tournament title every season. Its eight C-USA trophies are the most by any active or past women's soccer program in the league's 26-year history.
UNT returns key starters from last season's squad. First team all-conference defender Brooke Lampe and forward Allie Byrd are back and will once again be leaned on to lead the team in the locker room and on the field. In addition to Lampe and Byrd, North Texas also returns senior forward Olivia Klein and 2020-21 C-USA All-Freshman defender Madi Starrett who was one of the nation's top freshmen last year in assists.
In total, the Mean Green return eight student-athlete who started over half of last year's condensed season.
On Wednesday they welcome to Denton a top-10 Aggie's team that won the 2020-21 SEC regular season crown with a 7-1-0 league record and reached the quarterfinals of last season's NCAA Tournament.
UNT and TAMU met last year in the preseason in College Station, Texas. The Mean Green outshout the Aggies 22-10 in the match but fell 1-0 after First Team All-SEC forward Barbara Olivieri scored on a free kick. Texas A&M was also ranked No. 9 in the nation in that match.
North Texas and the Aggies have had a long history of closely contested matches.
Since the start of the 2015 season, the two programs have met three times — including last season's exhibition match — and all of the matches have been decided by one goal with two of the matches going into double overtime. All three of those matches were played at Texas A&M.
Though this match won't count towards the teams' respective records, protecting home field has always been a mantra for the program's head coach John Hedlund who has been at the helm since its beginning in 1995.
Over the program's 26-year history, North Texas has compiled a 193-29-15 (.845) home record in regular season matches. UNT recently set the program-record for most consecutive home victories (18).
They also have not lost a home conference match since Oct. 31, 2008. It's an unbeaten streak of 56 straight, which is an NCAA record.
Wednesday's match versus Texas A&M will not be streamed.
