Features two matchups with Big 12 powers
DENTON, Texas – North Texas Softball announced its fall schedule Thursday with six games spread across October and early November. The exhibition season returns for the first time since 2019.
The Mean Green will be back on the field at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 at Southern Nazarene, a Div. II university outside of Oklahoma City. The Crimson Storm finished fifth in the Great American conference last season with a 20-20 record.
UNT's home opener is against Seminole State College at 6:00 p.m. on Oct. 8. The Raiders finished 2020-21 No. 6 in the NJCAA Div. I poll with a 47-6 record and a Region 2 championship. They were booted from the national tournament by Grayson College, the Mean Green's fourth opponent this fall.
The defending Conference USA regular season champions will then travel to Stillwater, Okla. to take on Oklahoma State at 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 13. The Cowboys took second in the Big 12 in 2021 with a 48-12 record before their season came to a close with a 1-2 record in the Women's College World Series.
The Mean Green will then return home for a pair of games. Grayson County College will travel to Denton for a 5:00 p.m. Oct. 20 matchup at Lovelace Stadium. The Vikings finished last season with a 49-7 record, 19 and 23-game win streaks, and a loss in the NJCAA National Championship game.Â
UNT gets Weatherford College at 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 27 in Denton next. The Coyotes earned a 27-22 record last season with 41 home runs in 49 games.
The fall season concludes on Nov. 11 against defending NCAA champion Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. The Mean Green handed the Sooners one of their four losses in 2020 by a score of 4-3. The time is to be announced. UNT head coach Rodney DeLong said these formidable opponents will give the team, which features 19 freshmen and sophomores, a chance to develop heading into the spring.
"Our fall schedule gives us an opportunity to get away together as a team," DeLong said. "We have some challenging games which will tell us where we are currently at. I'm looking forward to the competition and watching this young group grow."
UNT Softball is coming off a 38-12 season, including an 18-2 record in conference and the first outright conference championship in program history. The team also earned a Conference USA record four year-end awards and placed eight student-athletes on the all-conference list, a program best.Â
