UNT Moves Up Leaderboard To Close The Prestige

LA QUINTA, Calif. - UNT head coach Brad Stracke had never seen conditions like the ones he saw in the first two days of The Prestige - wind gusts that reached more than 40 mph and affected the Mean Green in the afternoon wave on Monday and the morning wave on Tuesday before the afternoon wave of teams suspended play in their round Tuesday.
His goal for Wednesday's final round was simply to make some noise and move up the leaderboard, and he will leave California knowing his team was able to do just that.
The Mean Green climbed eight spots on the leaderboard, led by sophomore Vicente Marzilio, who shot a 1-over 72 to finish the tournament at 7-over and tied for 12th place in a field loaded with ranked teams and ranked golfers - 11 top-50 teams and 13 top-100 golfers. Of those teams, there were five top-20 teams and three top-10 squads, including No. 5 Pepperdine - the defending NCAA champions - who tied North Texas at 47-over par, along with No. 44 San Diego State. Only six teams shot better than the Mean Green's final-round 288. Fifth year Viktor Forslund was the leader on the day for UNT, firing a 1-under 70.
"It was a great finish today for the guys," Stracke said. "Tying with the defending NCAA champions will give this team a lot of confidence going into our tournament next week."
Sophomore Nikhil Gopal competed a few miles down the road from the team in The Prestige Individual Invitational and tied for 20th (out of 62 golfers) at 7-over par after consecutive 3-over 75s and a final-round 73.
The Mean Green will return to action next week as they head to Placida, Florida, for the Florida Gulf Coast Classic on Feb. 28-March 1.
